Twitter Poll on Naming Veterans                                         Sept 2018

Across the known veterans groups there has been a debate about what people call themselves and like to be known as. We ran a Twitter poll about this as there was a lot of “froth” and some veterans were getting very focussed.

From this poll it is clear that 1) Most veterans accept that agencies and charities will call them veterans even if they prefer another title. 2) 72% are happy to be called veterans or don’t mind. 3) 28% prefer to be called ex-services. 4) Veterans tend to refer to themselves as ex-Ship/Squadron/Regiment or Corps plus their role.

This is important information to the service providers, say in council offices or folks new to veterans services to help them quickly communicate effectively with their ex-service folk. Especially if that veteran is stressed.
